For decades the 4 C’s (color, cut, clarity and carat weight) have constituted the general guidelines for choosing a diamond. Today, there is a 5th C to consider: country of origin, namely Canada. Maple Leaf Diamonds are sourced directly from the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines, both located in Canada’s north West Territories.
Canada’s magnificent gems were once buried under fields of ice 3000 meters thick. The monumental task of locating these diamonds represent one of the greatest achievements in the history of diamond exploration. As a result of these, and subsequent discoveries, Canada has become the third largest supplier of gem quality diamonds in the world.
The Ekati mine, which started production in 1998, is Canada’s first diamond mine. Located in a remote Arctic tundra region, 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife and 200 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, it is accessible only by air, except for a three month period in the winter. The area contains some of the world’s cleanest, most beautiful diamonds, mined in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
